The Calico Desert is home to Sandy’s shop, rare forageables, unique fish, the Skull Cavern, secret areas, and the desert festival. But before you can enjoy any of it, you must unlock the bus. Here’s the complete guide from start to finish.
Where to Find the Calico Desert
The Calico Desert is located on the far northwest edge of the map. It’s always hot, dry, and sunny — a total contrast from Pelican Town. To reach it, you must repair the bus at the Bus Stop.
How to Repair the Bus (Two Methods)

You can unlock Desert access in one of two ways:
-
Community Center Route: Complete all four Vault Bundles:
- 2,500g
- 5,000g
- 10,000g
- 25,000g
Total: 42,500g
Once paid, the Junimos repair the bus overnight.
- Joja Route: Purchase the Bus Repair from JojaMart for 40,000g.
Either route works — choose whichever path you’re already pursuing in your save file.
How to Earn Money Quickly to Repair the Bus

If you’re still early in the game, here are simple ways to raise gold without needing high-level equipment or advanced processing machines.
1. Foraging
- Every season has forageables scattered across the valley.
- You can sell them raw or process them with a Preserves Jar for extra profit (unlocked at Farming Level 4).
- Preserves take only 2–3 days, making them much faster than wine.
2. Fishing
- Fishing is one of the fastest early-game money makers.
- The Training Rod costs only 25g and makes fishing much easier while leveling.
- Sell fish directly to Willie or put them in your shipping bin.
- Unsure if a fish is needed for a Community Center bundle? Hover over it in your inventory — the Community Center icon will pulse when it’s required.
3. Farming & Free Seeds
If you can’t afford many seeds, you can still grow plenty of crops:
- Cut grass and fiber for a chance to get Mixed Seeds.
- Dig up artifact spots and seed spots for seasonal seeds.
- Craft Wild Seeds using one of each seasonal forageable to produce 10 seeds.

4. Completing Quests
- Check Pierre’s quest board daily.
- Use the Special Orders Board for bigger rewards once unlocked.
5. Mining
- Sell duplicate minerals and gems after donating one to the museum.
- Collect cave carrots and mushrooms for extra income.
6. Using the Dehydrator
- If you have a dehydrator, process fruit and mushrooms for quick-turnaround profit.
- Crafting requires: 30 wood, 2 clay, 1 fire quartz.
- The mushrooms cave comes with a dehydrator already installed.
- Requires 5 of the same item to process.
Bus Schedule & Smart Travel Tricks
- The bus is repaired overnight once requirements are completed.
- Pam’s shift: 10:10 AM to 5:00 PM.
- Ticket price: 500g per trip.
How to Get to the Desert Earlier
Stand in front of Pam’s trailer door at 8:30 AM to block her for a moment. When she finally walks past you, she moves faster and reaches the bus stop around 9:30 AM — letting you buy a ticket earlier than normal.
Leaving the Desert
You can return to Pelican Town at any time, even after 5:00 PM. However, you cannot travel to the desert after 5:00 PM.
What Awaits You in the Calico Desert
- Desert Oasis (Sandy’s shop)
- New forageables and fish
- Skull Cavern
- Mysterious locked room and NPC
- Desert Festival
Once the desert is unlocked, explore freely and gather new resources at your own pace.
